Inspiring Future Linguists at top performing school in England

Professor Katerina Strani, LINCS Head of Department, visited Queen Elizabeth Grammar School (QEGS), Penrith, Cumbria, recently and met an engaged and enthusiastic group of sixth-form students. The School is amongst the top performing schools in Languages in the country, and it has recently won the GCHQ Language Challenge prize.

During the visit, Prof Strani and the Head of Modern Languages at QEGS explored the many opportunities that language learning can unlock, from international careers and studying abroad to developing the intercultural skills that are increasingly valued by employers across all sectors. The session sparked lively discussion about how languages can help students stand out in a global job market while also deepening their understanding of different cultures and perspectives. One of the most rewarding aspects of the visit was hearing students reflect on their own aspirations and consider how language study might support their future goals. Their curiosity, enthusiasm, and willingness to engage with new ideas made for a truly enjoyable and inspiring conversation.

Visits like these highlight the importance of helping young people see the real-world impact of language learning. Beyond linguistic proficiency, studying languages develops confidence, adaptability, communication skills, and cultural awareness, qualities that are invaluable in today’s increasingly interconnected world.

We are grateful to the teachers and staff at QEGS for their warm welcome and for creating such a positive environment for discussion. Building relationships with schools is an important part of our outreach work, and we are always delighted to engage with students who are considering their next educational and career steps.

We look forward to staying connected with QEGS and hope to welcome some of its talented pupils to LINCS in the future!
