European Commission Interpreter Inspires Future Language Professionals in LINCS

LINCS was delighted to welcome Joanne O’Donnell, EU conference interpreter and trainer with the European Commission’s DG Interpretation (DG SCIC), for a two-day visit that gave students invaluable insights into the interpreting profession.

A graduate of Heriot-Watt’s Languages (Interpreting and Translating) programme, Joanne returned to share her expertise with current students through classroom visits, practical workshops, and discussions on professional development. She provided personalised feedback and guidance while helping students strengthen core conference interpreting skills through hands-on activities.

A particular highlight was Joanne’s inspiring talk on careers within the European institutions. Reflecting on her own journey from Heriot-Watt student to professional interpreter and trainer, she offered students a valuable perspective on the many routes available within the language professions and international organisations.

The visit also reinforced the strength of LINCS’ long-standing partnership with the European Commission and highlighted the department’s commitment to combining academic excellence with industry engagement. Students particularly valued the opportunity to learn directly from a leading practitioner and gain a clearer understanding of the realities of professional interpreting.

The visit provided excellent preparation for a forthcoming virtual class with colleagues in Brussels and further demonstrated the impact of LINCS’ strong international networks. We are especially proud that a growing number of Heriot-Watt graduates have gone on to build successful careers within the European institutions, continuing a tradition of excellence in interpreting and translation.
