Heriot-Watt University can confirm with great pleasure that, as of February 2013, Jemina Napier will be joining the existing team in the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies as Professor and Chair of Intercultural Communication. With the launch of Heriot-Watt’s new BSL/English undergraduate program from September 2012, Jemina returns to the UK at a time when interpreter training will enter a new era.
Jemina is an interpreter, interpreter educator, researcher and consultant. She began her work as a British Sign Language interpreter in 1988, and now practices as a BSL, Auslan or International Sign interpreter. She has been involved in interpreter education since 1996 and has made a significant contribution to the field as a researcher, teacher, programme leader and general human dynamo! Her major research interest is in the field of signed language interpreting, but her wider interests include effective translation and interpreting teaching, sociolinguistics, and discourse analysis, and she has published over 40 book chapters and journal articles on research-based sign language interpreting and interpreting teaching.
